The End Is Near

So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

-Mark 13:29-31

It is now November, which is the final month of the Church Year and the end of the Season of the Church, which means the challenge that I issued to us all on Pentecost is coming to a close (though not an end, as we are to always urge our neighbors to come and hear the Gospel). I really had no idea what to expect and where we would end up by the end of this time, but would appreciate your thoughts on how it all went.

One thing that struck me about our numbers so far is the number of visitors we have had. In 23 Sundays (or weeks from May 27 to the end of October), we had nearly 45 different visitors in our church. That is an average of about two new people every Sunday! I don’t know about you, but that was a lot more than I thought we would have and that is fantastic. But who are these people and now what do we do about them?

Some of them are members of different LCMS congregations. Others are members of other local churches of a different Christian denomination. Others don’t really have a church home. And thinking about all of the visitors I met over this time, very few, if any, were strangers to the congregation. By and large, almost all, if not all of these visitors were people who knew at least one or more families within our congregation. And I don’t mean knew them as though they had met them once, but that they were part of the lives of our members on a regular basis. If they were not direct family members (sibling, children, grandchildren, etc.) of a member of Hope, they were good friends of them, people that we would see on a relatively regular basis and have an ongoing relationship with. That is evangelism and that is our greatest opportunity for evangelism and church growth: telling those people we know and see on a regular basis, people we see or talk to every day or every week, about God’s gift of faith which He has given to us.

And so as this challenge wraps up in this month of November, I would encourage you again to talk with those you know and see on a regular basis and invite them to Hope because the Lord is doing amazing things here. His Word is being taught and preached and His Sacraments are being administered. His Son, His cross, and the salvation that He won is being delivered to His people. The Holy Spirit is working through those people, through you, to continue to fulfill the Great Commission of Matthew 28 (“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you”) as well as the purpose of this congregation (“to proclaim and propagate the Christian faith through the Means of Grace and to cooperate in the work and service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church” -Constitution of Hope Lutheran Church, Article II).

So now, just one more month remains of this season and time of the Church Year. One more month remains to make a final push and plea to those you know. Four more weeks remain for God to work through you that you would proclaim His Word and share in His joy that you might be the difference in the life of your neighbor and the reason they go to heaven instead of hell. One more opportunity is before you to bear witness to all that God has done for you through His Son. That God sent His only begotten Son to become flesh and die for the forgiveness of your sins to give to you His resurrection and life everlasting.

In the mission of Christ,

Pastor Simek
