The Anchor October

For All the Saints

“And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on; And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on. And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing His love for me, And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and through eternity I’ll sing on.”

-What Wondrous Love Is This LSB 543 stz. 4

I know it’s only October and All Saints Day isn’t until November 1st,  and even then we won’t be celebrating and observing it until November 4th, but I am beginning to think about it and plan for it. All Saints Day is a day of the Church Year when we take a moment to remember and give thanks for all the saints who have gone before us and passed down the faith to us. While this includes all those in the Old and New Testament, all the patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and disciples, along with the church fathers and reformers and all the rest, it also includes more recent saints. For some of us, those might be great-grandparents or grandparents, parents or friends, a husband or wife, or even children whom we remember. Because of this, these relationships and the meaning these people had and continue to have in our lives, All Saints Day can be an extremely emotional day.

But in celebrating All Saints Day, we do not remember these people for their own sake or merit, but for Christ’s. That is why the first reading for that day from Revelation 7 depicts them all as clothed in white robes. This is truly a beautiful, comforting, and emotional picture give to us by Scripture. We remember and celebrate the work of Christ for those who have passed away. We remember and celebrate that Christ laid aside His crown for the souls of our loved ones, that as much as we love them, Christ loved them even more, laying down his life for them that they may live eternally and be free from death.

I know I have talked about my grandpa many times, especially in connection with All Saints Day, and so I will again. He was the faithful rock and head of the household and  family in my life that rain or shine, sleet or snow, sickness or health was in his pew every Sunday until he was no longer physically able to be there. He was my example of a faithful man and leader of a family and congregation whom I loved, and still love dearly. All Saints Day is the day I get to celebrate him in church, but not him, but the faith God had given him which he instilled in me to his dying day and to this day.

I will never forget his funeral. I will never forget the hymn What Wondrous Love Is This, the hymn of the day for his funeral, and the beautiful Gospel it proclaims for my grandpa and for me. So on All Saints Day, we will be singing this hymn in memory of him and God’s work for him together “While millions join the theme, I will sing,” with you, my grandfather, and all of our loved ones, of God’s wondrous love for us.

And I want to give you the chance to do the same for your loved ones. I would like to take song requests for All Saints Day in loving memory of those who have gone before us in the faith. If there is a hymn that reminds you of the faith of one of your loved ones, I would like to know, and I would like to sing it with you on All Saints Day in memory of what God has done for them in Christ. Whether it is a hymn from their funeral, one of their favorites, or one that always reminds you of them, please let me know that we might sing it together, along with all the saints, remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus for them that though they have died, yet they live and will be raised on the Last Day when we will get to stand beside them and sing to God and to the Lamb we will sing, and through eternity, we’ll sing on. I’ll sing on. Amen.

With all the singing saints in Christ,

Pastor Simek
