The Supper Or Not the Supper?
“Now, my tongue, the myst’ry telling Of the glorious body sin, And the blood, all price excelling, Which the Gentiles’ Lord and King, Once on earth among us dwelling, Shed for this world’s ransoming.”

The Supper Or Not the Supper?
In the month of August, three out of the four Gospel readings are from the Gospel of St. John, the sixth chapter. The first 21 verses are left out of the read through of this chapter of John because we got them, or at least their Markan parallel, in July with the feeding of the five thousand (Mark 6:30-44 and John 6:1-15) and Jesus walking on water (Mark 6:45-56 and John 6:16-21). The remainder of John 6 is sometimes called the “Bread of Life Discourse” as Jesus talks about being the Bread of Life.
This is actually a very controversial passage in many Lutheran circles. The controversy revolves around the question of whether or not Jesus is talking about the Lord’s Supper. Obviously, in John 6, early in the Gospel, Jesus has not had the Last Supper with His disciples yet, but the question remains about whether this points to the Supper or not? Luther says that Jesus is not talking about the Lord’s Supper here as he addresses and refutes Calvin’s claim that the Supper is not the physical body and blood of Jesus, but only the spiritual body and blood, especially in reference to verse 63 (“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all.”). So Luther denying that this is the Lord’s Supper is within the context of a larger theological debate, but nevertheless I (and most Lutherans) are usually pretty hesitant to disagree with Luther, even when Jesus says things like, “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (Jn. 6:54-55)
So is Jesus talking about the Lord’s Supper or not? Rev. Dr. Weinrich, seminary professor in Fort Wayne, author of the Concordia Commentary Series on the book of John, and one of the leading, foremost living Lutheran scholars on the book of John says no, and yes. He says, “no” at the beginning of this discourse, but, “yes,” by the end. At the beginning of the discourse (v. 22-51), Jesus speaks only of the bread, and it seems he is speaking not of the Supper, but of the crucifixion. After that though, Jesus changes and begins talking about eating and drinking, which had not been mentioned before. It is there where Dr. Weinrich believes Jesus moves from talking about the crucifixion to talking about the Supper.
Obviously, there are some fine and complexed theological points in this whole thing, but either way, it does not change what we believe about the Lord’s Supper. And as we read through (and I preach through) John 6, I would suggest that when we talk about the Supper, we are talking about the crucifixion, and when we talk about the crucifixion, we talk about the Supper. The two are intimately connected, and I would be hesitant to separate one from the other. Just as Baptism delivers Jesus to us, so, too, does the Supper. The cross and its benefits are delivered to us through the body and blood of Jesus in, with, and under the bread and wine for us Christians to eat and to drink. “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” (1 Cor. 11:26) “And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (Jn. 6:51). In the Supper, you receive the body and blood of Christ given and shed for you on the cross for the forgiveness of your sins. In the Supper, you receive the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ
