Mission Opposition
“See round You ark the hungry billows curling; See how Your foes their banners are unfurling And with great spite their fiery darts are hurling. O Lord, preserve us.”
-Lord of Our Life LSB 659 stz. 2

It has been about a month now, a little more, that we have been in the Season of Pentecost, the Season of the Church, and have been keeping a close eye on the number of visitors and percent of members in worship and the percent of members in Bible class. How do you think we are doing? Did you expect that we would have as many as we have? Did you expect we would have less and fewer than we have? How has it been going for you as you have been inviting others, members and non-members alike, to church and Bible class?
If you have found it difficult not only to ask and invite, but have found your efforts to be generally fruitless and difficult, you are not alone. As we look forward to the Gospel readings of our lectionary in July, we see that we are actually in very good company. In this month’s readings, Jesus and the disciples face all sorts of opposition to the proclamation of the Gospel which is why our hymn of the month for July will be LSB 659, Lord of Our Life.
Our Gospel readings for the month of July are a pretty straight forward reading through the Gospel of Mark. July 1st is Mark 5:21-43 where Jesus faces an ill and eventually dead daughter of Jairus and a woman with a flow of blood. July 8th is Mark 6:1-13 where Jesus is unable to perform miracles in his hometown because of their doubt and then sends out his disciples. July 15th is Mark 6:14-29 where we get the account of the death of John the Baptist. July 22nd is Mark 6:30-44 where Jesus faces the hunger of thousands of people and feeds them. And July 29th is Mark 6:45-56 where Jesus faces a storm at sea (an image of the devil and the chaos he causes) threatening to drown and kill him and his disciples. At every turn, Jesus is facing opposition to the Gospel and the teaching and preaching of the Word.
So in our hymn of the month, we get a picture of the enemies of the Gospel surrounding and assaulting the Church. In the second stanza (quoted above), the earthly enemies of God and the Gospel are described. In the third stanza (you will just have to look this one up), worldly darkness and hell itself assail us. We should not be surprised when we meet opposition to proclaiming the Word of God in the world.
People are comfortable in their darkness. Both members and non-members alike get comfortable in their routines, some of which include church on a regular basis, some don’t; some include Bible class on a regular basis, some don’t. In preaching the Gospel and inviting others to church, not only are we asking people to leave their routine, but to change, to repent and turn from themselves and turn to the Word of God. And of course, there is going to be opposition to change. People are not comfortable with change. People are not comfortable with the Gospel.
Yet it is a necessary change for salvation. It is a change for their (and our) eternal good. It is a change which puts them (and us) on what seems to be the losing side of this war and under assault and siege and we just described, but it puts us on the side of God. It makes us enemies with sin, this world, the devil, and hell, but it makes us at peace with God. As the fourth stanza of the hymn goes (again, look it up), “Peace in our hearts… Peace in Your Church… Peace when the world its endless war is waging, Peace in Your heaven.” Even in the face of this seemingly endless war on earth, the Gospel of Christ and Him crucified for me, for you, and for our neighbors gives peace now and forever.

In the war and peace of Christ,
Pastor Simek
